Maintenance – The only regular maintenance required on our VES range is to grease the bearings via remote grease points and to check the oil level in the gearbox.
Reliability – Every model utilizes a 4 stage, chrome ram that has been specifically designed and produced for our VES range for incredible reliability compared to traditional floor chains.
Compact Design – The removal of floor chains allows our VES range to have a shorter, deeper body that increases capacity and improves manoeuvrability.
Ground Clearance & Traction – The VES range also has improved ground clearance due to the removal of floor chains; 520mm minimum ground clearance on the VES/1500 model. In addition the axle on all our models can be placed further back since there is no gearbox required to drive the floor chains, this improves traction and reduces weight transfer when spreading.
Slurry Spreading – The VES range benefits from a completely sealed box, there are no gaps for the floor chains. Combined with the standard slurry door on all models means the VES range can hold and spread slurry.
Gearbox – Every model uses the same robust 160hp purpose built, one piece gearbox to prevent breakages. The gearbox is also fully protected by an armoured plate underneath the rear of the spreader.
Dual Protection System – The entire range has two layers of protection to ensure the spreader is not damaged. Specially formulated polyurethane couplings are used to connect the beaters to the gearbox to reduce the impact of any shock-loads on the drive line and protect the gearbox. In addition every model is protected by a 10mm shear bolt in the PTO shaft.
Rotor & Tip Design – The VES range uses fully-balanced hand-built beaters that are constructed in-house using 12mm steel plates for maximum strength. The beater tips are also constructed from 12mm steel plates and are fully reversible to double the life-span of each tip. It is also important to note that all the tips are secured in sockets to prevent premature loss.
Excellent Residual Value – Since our VES range commenced production more than 10 years ago, its second-hand value has proven to hold up extremely well. This is mainly due to the ram ejection system compared to a floor chain system, which is prone to wearing over time and is always a worry on a used machine.
Paint Finish – Since November 2011 we have shot-blasted, this is acknowledged in the paint industry as the best possible method for preparing steel for painting. The shot-blasting creates a profile for the paint to adhere to, improving adhesion and in turn the protection offered to the steel. Our five man team of trained sprayers then use the latest spraying equipment to finish our products with a dual layer paint finish. Every machine is finished with 80 microns of high-build primer and 50 microns of gloss polyurethane; this combination provides excellent protection and a high-quality finish.
Delivery – Marshall Trailers uses a computerized build system to plan production to ensure that machines are delivered on time. The final stage of delivery is undertake by our two artic lorries, a 7.5ton rigid lorry and a number of other haulage partners.
Spare Parts – Marshall Trailers has a full selection of spare parts for all our ranges, most of which can be dispatched immediately. In some cases we have spares for machines dating back forty years, which gives of mind when you buy a Marshall that you will be properly supported well into the future.

The whole concept behind the Vesuvius Vantage (Rear Discharge Spreader) was based on the premise that a spreader was required in the marketplace that should be virtually maintenance free. A tall order but one we have certainly achieved! The Vesuvius Vantage requires a daily visual check of the gearbox oil level and greasing by means of five remote points. Quite simply that is all that is required.
This was made possible by developing a unique design that uses a hydraulic ram to push the load to the beaters, eliminating unreliable and troublesome chains that are a notorious weakness of rear-discharge spreaders. The pushing rams speed is fully controllable due to the mechanical device that regulates the flow of oil to the ram as it extends, ensuring a constant speed of discharge.
This clever design also offers a number of other advantages over traditional rear discharge spreaders. The removal of a chain drive system allows a deeper, more compact design that has a lower centre of gravity making it an ideal choice for areas with narrow roads or for spreading on hills.
This gain is not at the expense of ground-clearance with all machines sporting an excellent 520mm of ground clearance. The removal of the chain drive gearbox also allows the axle to be placed further back on the machine, reducing weight transfer beyond the axle during spreading that could cause instability of the towing vehicle.
Operational wise the design is extremely easy to use. The speed of discharge is controlled by our mechanical device which reduces the oil flow as the ram moves forward enabling the operator to simply engage the spool valve prior to spreading.

Simply the pushing ram system in a Vesuvius Vantage is a patented design that cannot be copied by any other manufacturer. It is a revolutionary concept that provides huge benefits over the traditional floor chain design. The simple design means there is very little that can go wrong and results in the Vantage being an extremely reliable spreader. In addition there is virtually no maintenance; the operator merely has to grease the bearings on the rotor and drive shaft and keep the gearbox full of oil. The removal of the floor chains means that the spreader can have a deeper box, lowering its of gravity and making it more stable. Finally there is no need for a gearbox to drive any floor chains, which allows the rear axle to be moved further back; reducing weight transfer beyond the axle during spreading.

What are the current regulations on agricultural trailer brakes?
The law currently states that trailers travelling below 25mph have to have a braking efficiency of at least 25% (UK Road Vehicle Construction & Use Regulations). Above this speed it is unclear exactly what requirements an agricultural trailer has to meet, whether it is commercial braking requirements or still simply a 25% braking efficiency.
There is currently EU legislation under discussion which would implement a 50% braking efficiency for agricultural trailers, but this has been already been debated for a number of years without it becoming law. It seems unlikely that it will be implemented within the next few years, if ever, since this would impose higher braking standards than required on commercial vehicles.
Marshall products are fitted with hydraulic brakes as standard and on average provide a braking efficiency of 35%, which exceeds the current legal requirements. This impressive baseline performance is achieved by fitting high quality axles supplied by the world’s leading axle manufacturer, combined with enlarged 25mm brake cylinders and durable 2 wire hoses.
Take time to examine the specifications of our models and take note of the brake sizes and axles sizes. In particular notice we fit commercial 420 x 180 10 stud axles as standard on our QM/14, QM/16, QM/1600 and QM1800 models; not 10 stud industrial axles, which provide significantly reduced performance. The way to tell the difference between these axles is a commercial axle uses an S-cam brake rode while an industrial axle uses a flat-cam brake rod.
If a customer requires enhanced braking performance we also offer air brakes with loading sensing, full ABS systems and a number of axle upgrades. This guarantees a Marshall trailer can meet current legal requirements now and any EU legislation that could potentially be introduced in the future.
